Night Shift
Night Shift maps movement for plants that run after day crews have signed off. It focuses on lit access lanes, machine-side visibility and the handover points that tend to break down on South African night work.

What Night Shift changes on the factory floor
Night Shift is built around plant work that carries on after day operations have closed down. It helps South African sites think through access, visibility and floor use when the line must keep moving at night.
Start with the surface under traffic, the hours between shutdown and restart, and the hazards that appear once daylight drops away. Highveld dust dulls markings, coastal air adds slip risk near doors, and load-shedding changes which zones stay visible. The note is written for active plants in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and smaller regional sites where night production still has to move cleanly.
Photograph the route before pallets, bins or temporary barriers are shifted for the shift. Night Shift includes a short reference note that can sit at a dispatch desk, gatehouse or maintenance file. When crews swap over at midnight, that record helps keep the same lane widths, crossing points and storage edges in use.
Night route handover pack
By the end, the site has a marked night route, a handover check and a record tied to the exact bay, line or dock in use. Night Shift stays with access after hours, sight lines under artificial light and the pinch points that show up when fewer people are on the plant. One clear route for forklifts, trolleys or foot traffic is more useful than a stack of alternate sketches.
Use Night Shift alongside the related product note when a plant needs after-hours movement reviewed in context. Before anything is issued to site, check that route names, access points and lighting references match the current layout. On the contact form, send the path name and one current image showing the work area at night or during low light.

Night risks on South African sites
The note considers freight pressure around OR Tambo, industrial movement through Sunnyrock, older concrete in Crown Mines and mixed-use premises where after-hours access is tightly controlled. Many plants are not starting from an empty shell. Mark what must stay live, what cannot be relocated, and which doors, cages or bays only open on specific shifts.
Sea air near Durban changes cleaning cycles and can leave entry points damp by late evening. Inland dust settles on markings and reduces contrast under weaker light fittings. During power cuts, inspection order matters, especially where guards, sensors and pedestrian routes rely on the same backup supply.

Low-light movement and handover
Send site photos, operating hours, traffic type and the points where the night run has become unsafe or hard to read. Include any recent changes to storage, guarding or access control. Good input makes it easier to test whether the route still works once daylight is gone.

File the Night Shift note with the project record while the observations are still current. It helps when maintenance, production and procurement need the same reference for markings, barriers and low-light movement rules. Keeping one clear record also reduces confusion at the next shift handover.
