Spare List

A spare list for patch materials, repair compounds and maintenance items often kept for high-wear floor areas.

How the Spare List helps during a maintenance week

Spare List sets out the repair and maintenance items often kept back for hard-worked floor areas. It includes patch materials, repair compounds and other basics used where wear shows first.

Start the Spare List with the area name, shutdown slot and the surface system underfoot. Warehouse aisles, loading zones and production wash bays need different patch materials, sealants and repair mortars. Inland dust, coastal humidity and heavy forklift traffic in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town all change what should be kept on hand.

Photograph the worn section before sweeping out loose material or lifting old sealant. Add close shots of cracked joints, spalled edges and any previous repair that has broken away. Those images help separate cosmetic wear from stock that is needed for urgent patching during a maintenance stop.

Stock held for wear points

A good Spare List names the consumables and repair products most likely to be used first. That usually includes patch compounds, joint sealants, primers, repair mortars and small accessories needed to mix, place and finish the repair. The aim is to avoid stoppages caused by missing basics when a worn area is opened up.

Link the Spare List to recent repair photos, shutdown timing and notes on what failed last time. Include product names where known, especially for joints, sealants and mortars that did not bond or cure properly. Use the contact form with the site name, area reference and one clear image of the damaged section.

Wear points worth stocking for

List what moves through the area before ordering spare material. Pallet jacks, steel wheels, battery acid, wash-down water and abrasive dust all point to different maintenance items. Older industrial surfaces around Crown Mines, port-linked facilities in Durban and busy dispatch sites near OR Tambo often show wear in different places.

Coastal conditions can affect cure behaviour, storage and shelf life for unopened repair products. On Highveld sites, fine dust can spoil bond strength if the surface is not cleaned correctly before patching. Load-shedding also matters because mixing, lighting and ventilation may be limited during a planned repair window.

Notes that sharpen the list

Build the spare list with photos of the floor area, shutdown timing, and notes on joints, sealants, repair mortars or parts that have already been used up or failed. Keep the subject line clear.

Record the bay number, damage type and any product previously used in that spot. Include whether the repair is for a joint edge, pothole, delaminated topping or chemical attack near process equipment. Short, specific notes make the Spare List more useful when maintenance teams prepare for the next shutdown.
