Starter Floor

A starting layout for a new production floor, built for South African plants that need clear movement, safe zones and room to train operators.

How Starter Floor begins on a real plant week

Starter Floor is a practical base layout for a new production area. It gives South African plants clear movement lines, defined safe zones and enough room for operator training without crowding the floor.

Start with the surface material, the shift pattern and the condition of the work area before any line plan is drawn. Highveld dust, coastal humidity, load-shedding and truck collection times all change aisle width, marking choice and pedestrian separation. These notes are written for operating plants in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and regional sites where layout decisions must suit daily production.

Take the first walk-through photo before anything is moved. Each pack comes with a compact reference card you can mount at the bay or keep with the PO file. That small record often prevents a messy restart when the shift changes and everyone remembers the floor differently.

First markings and handover

The pack sets out one starter arrangement for people, pallets and lift traffic, with hazard points called up in plain language. It also includes checks for lane width, turning space, machine approach and operator sightlines. That makes the first operating pattern easier to hold during handover and training.

Interlink Starter Floor to the matching plant plays note and a floor notes entry before you widen scope. Check the pack again against the site file before the courier takes it. On the contact form, use the path name as the subject and add one photo of the floor as it stands.

Plant conditions that affect layout

We account for export traffic through OR Tambo, warehouse pressure around Sunnyrock, worn concrete in Crown Mines and trading-hour limits at smaller mall-based production sites. Not every starter layout begins in an empty shed. If the plant is live, note what must stay, what is breaking down, and what cannot be shifted this month.

At coastal sites, moisture and salt can shorten the life of some marking systems and increase surface prep requirements. Inland plants usually fight dust build-up, which can dull yellow lines, hide edge warnings and affect adhesion if cleaning is poor. If backup power changes machine use during outages, the layout should show how people and trolleys move when only part of the area is running.
