Scale Up
A growth route for floors that are adding volume, with South African shift patterns, staging pressure and tighter stock movement in mind.

How Scale Up works when the floor load increases
Scale Up is for plants where output is rising and the floor starts feeling tight. It looks at staging space, shift-pattern pressure and stock movement so added volume does not turn into daily congestion.
Start with what changed in throughput, where pallets now queue, and which hand-offs are slipping between shifts. In Gauteng, dust build-up can hide line markings and rack labels, while Durban humidity can affect wraps, cartons and visibility at dock areas. Scale Up looks at movement under load-shedding windows, overtime starts and dispatch cut-offs so extra volume does not turn every aisle into a hold point.
Photograph the staging zones, pick faces and dispatch edge before the next busy run starts. For Scale Up, a brief record of trolley counts, forklift routes and shift handover friction is more useful than a polished sketch made later. That snapshot helps separate one-off disruption from recurring pressure caused by volume growth.
Pressure points under added volume
The Scale Up note maps where stock waits too long, where traffic crosses too often, and which parts of the site are carrying more than they were set up for. It also lists checks for staging depth, turning space, pedestrian separation and replenishment timing. The aim is a route people can follow during a packed production day without guessing.
Before widening the brief, compare Scale Up with the linked Plant plays note and any earlier site records that still reflect current traffic. On the contact form, use scale-up as the heading and include current volumes, shift times and one image showing the tightest movement point. If part of the site cannot be moved this quarter, state that upfront so the note works around it.

Shift pressure around dispatch bays
Scale Up must account for fixed racking, dock positions, fire equipment access and the stock profile actually moving through the plant. A site near OR Tambo may feel export pressure at very different times from a plant serving regional trucks out of Wadeville or Pinetown. When output rises, old bottlenecks at wrap stations, battery bays and dispatch doors usually become the first daily constraint.
Coastal sites often need closer attention to corrosion on barriers, wheel condition and packaging stability in damp air. On the Highveld, fine dust can dull markings, reduce scanner legibility and make neglected edges harder to spot during night shift. Generator periods also change when charging, replenishment and housekeeping can happen without adding more congestion.

Records that show volume creep
Brief Scale Up with site photos, new traffic volumes, timing and what is already falling behind on the floor. Write an honest subject line.

Send current shift patterns, approximate pallet or unit movement, and photos of the busiest route from production to dispatch. Include anything that cannot shift position, such as fixed machines, cage storage, dock levellers or QA hold areas. That gives Scale Up enough context to focus on movement, staging and stock pressure rather than abstract layout talk.
