Floor notes

Soft Start

A note on phased starts for plants that need sections opened carefully, not all at once.

Some floors do not need a full shutdown and some plants cannot spare one. Soft Start deals with phased floor work, section by section, so traffic, curing and reinstatement can be managed without losing the whole area at once.

Soft Start is written for plants reopening work zones in stages, with one bay or lane handed back while the next section is still under treatment. The note stays close to live-site matters such as curing windows, forklift detours, barrier placement and shift handover detail across Gauteng, KZN and the Western Cape. If this staged approach suits your plant, send the page slug through the contact form.

Checks before phased reopening

  • Open section order listed clearly
  • Traffic route shown with one current site photo
  • Matching system page linked for the section being reopened
  • Site contact named in standard South African job format

Read the related system and application pages after this note. Soft Start explains how staged access works when production cannot lose the full area, while the catalogue page sets out the coating or repair build-up. Used together, they help a plant team check whether a proposed sequence suits traffic, cleaning and curing on site.

How Soft Start enters an Oric floor week

Soft Start covers phased opening on a live plant floor. Use it where sections must come online in order, with production, access and curing worked around one area at a time.

Start with the plant section that must return first, then note the shift pattern and the traffic it carries. Durban moisture, Highveld dust, load-shedding interruptions and dispatch timing all change how a phased opening should be set out. We write for operating sites in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and smaller industrial centres where one closed zone can affect the whole run.

Take a record photo before barriers, pallets or machines are moved. Soft Start works better when the first condition of each section is fixed in writing and image, especially where supervisors change over mid-process. That record helps the next shift see which bay is curing, which route is live and which area stays out of use.

What the staged note names

The page should leave you with an opening sequence, a traffic plan and checks tied to each section. Soft Start is about keeping part of the plant available while another part is protected for curing or reinstatement. A small area reopened in the right order can carry more value than a large area handed back with uncertain access rules.

Link Soft Start with the matching plant sequence note and a journal entry before you expand the work area. Check the pack against the live site file before materials move to the next section. On the contact form, use the path name and add one photo of the area in its current state.

Plant conditions that affect sequencing

We account for OR Tambo dispatch pressure, Sunnyrock warehouse movement, Crown Mines production areas and the trading pattern of smaller Gauteng sites. Most plants need staged work because stock, forklifts or process lines cannot all stop together. If markings, old patches, cracked joints or worn turning points are present, note them with the section they affect.

On the coast, humidity can stretch curing decisions and change the best time to reopen a bay to traffic. Inland dust can dull temporary markings and make section boundaries harder to read during a night shift. Power cuts also matter, because inspection, lighting and ventilation may not line up with the planned hand-back of each area.

File the Soft Start note while the section order is still fresh. It helps when a buyer or plant manager needs a clear record of which area opened first, what stayed closed and what checks were tied to each stage.
